Remember my little video for making newspaper plant pots? On Saturday morning, The Boy and I actually put our pots to use by gum.
We smooshed moist potting soil into them..
Wrote-up some labels using old cut up mini-blinds…
Snuggled them up nice and cozy into a couple of deep foam meat trays…
Sowed some seed…
Sprinkled a little soil and water on them. And finally… placed them in a sunny window.
Now for the hard part… Waiting.
Hrm.
This is a true test of my patience. I like to cheer them on whenever I walk by that particular window. A little “You can do it! Grow babies, grow!” never hurt, am I right? I’ll keep you posted on their progress…
Edited to Add on 3 Apr 2012: Please note that I’ve used black and white newspaper to make the pots as black ink is made of soy and safe to use around edibles. Coloured newspapers should be avoided as the ink may contain some toxins.

I've read more than one scientific study that says plants respond to a positive environment and especially certain music and people talking to them – so talk away Michele, talk to your plants. 😉

What a lovely little garden you've planted! The Boy must be contented and later on he'll be delighted, for sure, when the new life appears! I liked the video, it was a nice idea to show us the process of making the pots.
I've heard not once or twice that it's good to talk to the flowers/the plants. They "understand" and react to the intonation of the voice. Sometimes they suffer and fade when their owner is absent… I had such an experience with a nearly dead flower that revived, when I came back and began to take care of it, talking tenderly!:)))

Love the mini bland labels. I will use that. It is so warm here that I put seeds right into the ground today – and planted the lettuce plants we started three weeks ago. Usually, it is blustery and cold. Hope my lettuce does ok.
I hope your lettuce will be fine too. If there's a frost threat you could always cover them, right?
This reminds me that I've got to get our little garden started, too!
I was so glad to get it started, and we already have zinnia and cosmos popping up! yippee!

OMG! I just went out to the kitchen to rescue my meat trays! What great idea – they are perfect for trays to catch moisture from little pots of seeds! I would never have thought of this use for them.
Brandywine tomatoes – my favorite! So, do you have a long enough season for them to mature in Canada? We have tried them twice here, but never had a season long enough to allow the fruit to reach maturity. We have given up in favor of a variety the matures a little more quickly.

You make it look easy to do this. Maybe I should try to grow some chilies in my house too but need to find soil first. Thanks for the tips.
I love growing things from seed too and it's such a fun thing for kids to get involved with too.
