Wee hexies! Oh how I love thee…
For a week now, I’ve been making wee 3/4″ fabric hexagons. This here is what got me going in the first place. I’ve made 120 so far. My goal is to make 15 per day for 133 consecutive days for a grand total of 2000 hexagons. And then, I’ll sew them all together into a fantastical quilt. It’s a lofty goal, yes. Don’t know if I’m being realistic… But now is not the time for realism I figure. No, right now I have a dream and I figure it can’t hurt to dream big, right? Anyway, I’m feeling all warm and fuzzy about it at the moment. Hopefully that feeling lasts a while.
In the meantime, I play. Above is an appliqué block possibility. See? Good times are being had.

FYI:
Found a great resource page for new quilters at Martingale. Check it out: How To Quilt. And a great hexagon english paper piecing tutorial resides right HERE at Craft Zine.

Love your hexagon wreath! It’s addictive!
Christie - Fine Lines says
Now, THAT is a lofty goal. Good luck — the motivation of the finished quilt will keep you going:)

So fun! While you wait to have them all made, better string them in a wreath and post them on The Wreath Blog. Love that first photo!
Michele Pacey says
Thanks Michelle! I'll have to consider that idea. 🙂

2000! What a family heirloom that will be when its all finished. Sounds like a huge undertaking but its been done before……. and 133 days doesn't sound too bad! ;o)
Melissa says
Love the blue fabric with the reddish flowers and olive leaves.

Can I tell you that I am in no way surprised that you are a hooked on hexies? It's completely you.

From one who has made well over 300 3/4" hexies so far – never fear – your enthusiasm will never wane! and that is because each one is just a bit different and that alone makes for excitement!
I love your idea of setting a daily goal. With all the projects i have going right now my goal may have to be closer to 5 a day but – it works!
And thank you for the link to "How to Quilt" I have it bookmarked. I can always use a good resource like this one.
PS your hexie's are pure eye candy!
Michele Pacey says
Thanks Pam, I may have to tweak my daily goal, but for now I'm on track (after a week that is). We'll see how it goes. 🙂

Looks exciting! I'm still a bid scared of Hexagons!! can't wait to see what you make of them….
Annie says
Do you really mean each one is only 3/4" accross? Or am I just being stupid? Thats so tiny.
Hugs,
A x
Michele Pacey says
Oh gosh no! The measurement refers to the length of the sides; all six sides measure 3/4 inches. Thus a 3/4 inch hexie. 🙂

Hello Michelle,
I´m Illa from Austria. Sorry, my english is not perfect. I love your blog, it`s always a inspiration for me when I`m reading your posts. Speacially your paper-work (crafts) are so simple and so beautiful.

Michele Pacey says
Well thank you Illa for your sweet comment! I seem to be on a little paper crafts hiatus at the moment. Sometimes my hands and heart need something different. So I'm quilting. I'm sure you'll see some paper crafts again soon. 🙂

I've only made one 'tumbling blocks' cot quilt [entirely by hand – no sewing machine] and was SO proud of the result. Am very impressed with your ambition and know you'll be thrilled with it when it's done. Keep at it girl…
Michele Pacey says
Your tumbling blocks quilt sounds like a little bit of heaven Garcott! I would be SO proud too. And maybe one day I will be. 😉

I love that you have a goal! Do you have to keep an iron at hand? They are beautiful, I can just imagine the finished piece will be stunning.
Michele Pacey says
No thankfully, you don't need to have an iron on hand. As long as you have some hex papers ready to go (which I'm cutting from stiff bits of junkmail), some fabric scraps, a pair of scissors, and a needle and thread, you can make the hexies anywhere. Yesterday, I made a bunch while waiting at the doctor's office. 🙂
Jill says
Oh my goodness Michelle! 2000 of those little gems??? Good luck! Can't wait to see the finished quilt – it will be totally amazing I'm sure!! 🙂
Michele Pacey says
Like I said, a lofty goal… Hopefully it will be amazing. Let's just say it'll be amazing if I actually get it done, hee hee!

You are Sew ambitious! Looking forward to seeing your progress.

Wow, they are cute. I love them all stacked in rainbow fashion.

The wreath is awesome! No possibility to keep it this way? Anyway great photo!
SisterDG says
HAHAHAHA! I, too, have a soft spot for the hexies. 🙂 Now you're making me want to start a quilt of my own. Of course, I SHOULD just finish the hexie tote bag and stocking I've abandoned. For me, the fun part is all in the hexies themselves.
I'm sure your quilt is going to be freaking amazing!
Michele Pacey says
I love seeing each little hexie too. Why are they so fascinating? … It's a mystery. 🙂
Melissa Kojima says
Good luck, Michele. Yeah, it does sound like a lofty goal, but when you split it into 15 hexies a day that doesn't sound so bad. I love what you have so far.
mrchandler says
I have seen these many times, but haven't tried them my selves. How do you sew them together?
Anonymous says
Hexies are great. I sew the corners not through the paper. There are some nice tuts here http://turningturning.com/hexagon-quilt-tutorials/

2000?!? I cannot even imagine. I have never made an actual hexagon, and now I'm afraid to try… What if I can't stop making them and they take over my life 😉 Good luck, and I have a feeling you will get to 2000 easily.
