I have a bone to pick with people who poo-poo Valentine’s Day. First of all, how can anyone be down on love? It’s LOVE for goodness sakes! If we were dedicating a day to, say, Satan or something equally evil, then I would understand people getting all hot under the collar. But love? Love is, unquestionably, the best thing we have! Name one thing that’s better than love. What is the problem with having a public reminder one tiny day on every 365 to show a little compassion, kindness, and yes love, to those around us? Granted, it is over-the-top commercialized and big-freaking-business. Okay. I give you that. But does that mean we have to buy in? Do we, as people, no longer have free will? Can we not find other creative ways to celebrate the day besides jewelry, chocolates and roses? Please. Give me a brown paper bag and some scraps of junkmail and I’ll show you Valentine’s Day!
Now go out there and LOVE somebody goshdarnit!

You cracked me up. I get fed up with the commercialism of it, but I have very fond memories of my first valentine…in first grade. The boy gave me a "special" card, not the kiddie ones Mom buys for us to give the class. I was Queen for the day. :~P These days, my husband doesn't do V.Day, but we tell each other Happy Arizona's Birthday! Well, he does love his home state, so that's something, right? ;~)

You are hilarious! Happy Valentine’s Day Michelemademesomegorgeouspaperhearts!
I love to memorize a day of Love, what I don’t love is that we are copying all sorts of holidays from other parts of the world and forget about our own traditions. Amen.

Indeed! Happy Valentine's Day! We don't really exchange gifts, but just take it as a day to eat good food together (which includes chocolate fondue!) and have family movie night(tonight is Harry Potter & Deathly Hallows Pt 1…a nice Valentine's movie, eh? 🙂

It's not that I have a problem with Valentine's Day, exactly. But I hate how over commercialized it is. And truthfully, I would much rather my husband give me something I need or really want, than waste $60 on flowers that are going to be dead in two days.

Happy Valentine's Day Michele. I LOVE this day – and I love you for ranting about all those who don't. Continue on my friend – I'm right behind you.

I think it is the lonely people that feel hurt that rather hate V day as they don't get any little paper hearts ever.
Cathy says
Good reminder Michele! We need to take back the day from big biz and the giddy lovers. It should be everyone's day. And it's a nice excuse to make paper hearts too!
Melissa Kojima says
I totally agree with you, Michele! Yes!!!! Hope you had a wonderful Valentine's Day!!!

Perfect Valentine Day post to remind us that we do NOT have to buy in to the commercial aspects but rather make it our own day – a day to recognize those we love and hold dear.
We use it as a day to show appreciation to many people who have improved our life in one way or another – people who refer us business, take care of our shipping and postal needs, went out of their way to help us find our way to the items we wanted while the store we were shopping in was being overhauled; the lab tech who consistently prints our images as well as they can be printed; the generous souls who take the time to keep us up to date in the digital camera world; our "adopted" families…….
Of course Christmas is traditional for this kind of recognition, but guess what – pop in and surprise someone on Valentines Day! The unexpected surprise brightens their day! And yours!!

Too funny! I totally agree! My husband biught me flowers, my favorites and then said, i know, I probably should have bought roses since it's Valentine's… I was like, no, these are my favorites, just becuase it's Valentine's why would I want flowers that I don't like as much???
